Storyboarding & Animatics: General Tips
Clearly establish a foreground, middle ground and background to immerse the viewer
Avoid monotone settings, add variety in scale and use of space
Add detail to suggest a sense of place (location, weather, time, etc.)
Help immerse the viewer by looking past and through objects and let objects break the frame
Use size relation and surface detail to establish a sense of scale and expanse
Create a sense of complexity with assets and surface detail (3D artists, remember this also when texturing)
Use repetition wisely and use assets to open up space, not crowd it
Use clear and strong staging
Use the camera to immerse the viewer
Use shadows effectively as part of the composition and to create complexity in the scene
Clearly pose characters, use strong hand poses and considered facial expressions
To convey principles, the images included here are mostly formulaic. I encourage you to be more creative and keep in mind that the same principles apply. For a successful project, start with images that communicate clearly and effectively. When each panel communicates strongly, the story will be much clearer as well. Rules are there to be broken.
